Garfield is Dead

Garfield is dead! Well erased from his own strip that is. A world without Garfield is a better world some will say. The famous and in some cases infamous feline comic strip has a love hate relationship with with many readers. When comic strips were stagnant in the 80’s, it was easy pickings for Jim Davis with his creation Garfield. More of a merchandising icon to equal Snoopy in sales. Unlike Peanuts the strip lacked that intellectual twist that Peanuts drove home to the core audience. Now who would think that Garfield would garnish a whole new audience with Garfield Minus Garfield. Jim Davis is astonished himself with the online success of webcomic Garfield Minus Garfield where Garfield is wiped out by a Photoshop eraser. Witness the dark brooding panels of a lonely Jon Arbuckle without Garfield. The idea gives the strip a whole new life, at times it supersedes the original idea. The sans Garfield strip is so popular that now it will be in book form for all the masses to enjoy from Ballantine Books, a division of the Random House Publishing Group. Dan Walsh the madman behind this idea since February 2008 has gained a notoriety for himself and now will reap the fruits of his labor as will Jim Davis.
Garfield Minus Garfield site creator Dan Walsh says, “When I looked at Jon and laughed at his crazy antics I thought ‘He’s just like me.’ As it turns out, I wasn’t the only one saw myself in him: millions of visitors from all over the world visit Garfield Minus Garfield and tell me they think the same thing. Now, thanks to the awesome generosity and humor of Jim Davis, Garfield Minus Garfield is going to become a book and I’m absolutely honored to be part of it.”

Simon’s Cat ‘TV Dinner’

When it comes to pet owners some are attention deprived when it comes to the needs of their said animals. Simon’s Cat is a new animation created by Simon Tofield of Tandem Films. Sure this is Garfield territory, but then again we can’t be finicky. Simon Tofield’s simple lined feline animated shorts are hitting the right chord with cat lovers. With 3 short films in the can, this is one creation that will have more than nine lives.

BARACK OBAMA Comic Book

Inspiration is abound. Hollywood is cashing in comic book related movies with this summer’s bonanza box office receipts. So what are comics to do? They look to politics for the newest pool of ideas. When you look at it, American politics is greater than life. Heroes are built and destroyed by the media. Scrutinized on a daily basis. Their lives belong to all. Why not create comic books about them. IDW Publishing is publishing the stories of both BARACK OBAMA and JOHN MCCAIN. This idea is not so far fetched as you might think. Marvel Comics sold copies of the life story of John Paul II in the 80’s.

The Presidential Material comic book biographies or ?Graphic Novellas,? provide a straight and unbiased look at the two presumptive party nominees. Each book is thoroughly researched from the public record. Additionally each book will contain a list of annotations citing the author?s sources. The PRESIDENTIAL MATERIAL books are written by Andrew Helfer & drawn by Stephen Thompson (McCain) and Jeff Mariotte & Tom Morgan (Obama). The covers are by J. Scott Campbell.

Cuil New Search Engine


Cool! Kewel! Cuil? Cuil is the newest search engine that might give Google some competition. At one time Yahoo was king and a little lacklustre simplified search engine with a goofy name Google came out of nowhere and cleaned house. Cuil has some promise considering it was bankrolled by 33 million because the architects are former Google employees (Tom Costello and Anna Patterson) who created this little jewel. Word has it that it there are still many kinks in the engine. Time will tell if the new upstart will put any dent on Google. If the bugs are not fixed, Cuil might just cool off and disappear. The dark background deliberately contrasting Google’s warmer gentle white welcome page with daily fun laced Google logos. Cuil gets straight to the point and starts a unique magazine style search experience.
